Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, says the decision by President John Mahama to suspend the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, amounts to “judicial intimidation”.

Mr. Awuku described the development as an attempt to undermine the independence of the Judiciary.

“Constitutional democracy must be protected, we are witnessing troubling attempts that may intimidate the Judiciary and influence its independence,” he stated.

He made the comments in a Facebook post in Tuesday, April 22, 2025, after news broke that President John Mahama had suspended the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo.

The Presidency later indicated in a statement that a five-member committee had been formed to probe three petitions pushing for her removal from office.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentarian has, however, cautioned that history has shown the dangers of unchecked power, emphasizing that it could “erode the very foundations of justice”.

He further added that the president’s decisions marks a concerning chapter in the country’s history.
