A Communications Team Member of the Movement for Change, Nana Yaw Sarpong, has questioned the current credibility of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) as a representative body for lawyers in the country.

He asserted that the GBA, as an association, has lost its relevance; hence, its moral authority in the ongoing discussion surrounding the move to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkonoo raises major concerns about its integrity.

Speaking on President John Mahama’s suspension of the Chief Justice in the quest to oust her from office, Mr. Sarpong criticized the GBA’s stance, emphasizing that they are fully aware the President is exercising his constitutional rights appropriately.

“In any case, the GBA, do they really have the voice to speak on national issues in the country? I know the GBA to be an association for lawyers, but I entreat the lawyers that they are almost losing their relevance in our system as an association,” he told Ohemaa Sakyiwaa on the Angel Morning Show, Thursday, May 8, 2025.

Nana Yaw Sarpong who is also Aide to Independent Presidential Candidate in the 2024 general elections, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, urged the GBA to take his remarks as a wake-up call to revive the association and make it more relevant, as it was known to be in the past.

“I will entreat the lawyers to look into it and begin to form other associations that will build up equal strength. They themselves know that the President has not flouted any constitutional right,” he added.

The Movement for Change senior communicator also criticized the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their constant criticism of the President’s decision, which recently culminated in a demonstration dubbed ‘Save the Judiciary’.

“Is the NPP telling and suggesting that the constitutional right that permits the removal of a Chief Justice after his or her appointment into office should be scrapped? So once you are appointed as CJ, you become untouchable, whether you perform or underperform, you cannot be removed during your term of office?”
