Minority leader urges end to political retribution

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has implored members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to abandon the inclination for retribution against the members of the National Democratic Party (NPP), for past transgressions during their time in office.

Mr Afenyo-Markin made the call on Friday, May 30, 2025, at a gathering at the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) headquarters, when while advocating for the release of the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako.

Mr. Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is being held detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in connection with an investigation into illegal mining fraud and money laundering.

He asserted that holding onto past grievances is unnecessary and detrimental to the political landscape. Mr Afenyo-Markin urged political parties across the nation to combat the cycle of vengeance that often ensues after gaining power.

“At a point as a political class, let us put an end to that era of ‘Do Me I Do You’.

“I have said that posterity is watching; if something happened yesterday and it was wrong, if it happens today, it is wrong and if it happens tomorrow, it still remains wrong,” he emphasised.

The Minority Leader further articulated that certain matters should be addressed in a rational manner, rather than being perpetually centred on legal action.

“We are talking about democracy, and it is not about ‘court court court’; it is about common sense and somebody being reasonable and thinking about tomorrow,” he described.

He also criticised the EOCO for not considering Mr. Antwi Boasiako’s health condition when imposing a substantial bail bond of 50 million Ghana Cedis.

He pointed out that such an amount would be challenging to pay, particularly given their intention to pursue legal processes.
