Senseless ‘Dumsor Levy’ will send NDC back to opposition if… – Odike

Businessman, Akwasi Addai Odike has expressed that, the incumbent administration’s failure to scrap the one cedi fuel tax to be used to solve the power crisis (Dumsor) in the country, will rather lead to their defeat in the next election, describing the tax as illogical.

According to him, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is underestimating Ghanaians’ awareness by playing mind games with them, assuming they’re naïve enough to follow any decisions made by the party.

“If the NDC does not remove the one cedi tax, it will take them to opposition, mark my word; I am advising them and they even need to thank me; they are playing with the minds of Ghanaians because they think they are gullible to go by any decision they impose on them,” he stated.

He said this during a panel discussion with the host for the Angel Morning Show (AMS) ,Saddick Adams, on Monday, June 16, 2025.

Odike emphasized that, the ECG should not even operate at a loss, given that, they buy power from Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) on credit and sell it to consumers via prepaid systems.

He asserted that, the operations of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are hindered by political meddling, with politicians exploiting the institution for their own financial gain, and leaving Ghanaians to bear the financial consequences.

“The ECG buys the power from GRIDCo, they buy on credit and instantly sell to consumers through order to payment system which is also known as prepaid so why does the ECG have to run at a loss?

“The NPP and NDC have been behind this, using ECG as cash cow and later burden Ghanaians; you’re imposing a one cedi tax on every liter of fuel, meanwhile, there is someone living in a village where he has no access to light, yet he will pay this tax for a certain leader of government to enjoy free electricity while the person on the other hand, gains no benefit,” he said.

He called on the government to rethink the fuel tax decision and repeal it completely rather than just withholding it, emphasizing that, Ghanaians entrusted them power and they expect policies that will benefit them.
