Former Spokesperson of the Ghana Education Service, Kwasi Kwarteng, has described the internal wrangling within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a natural phase, typically of any party that is in opposition.
Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, he explained that after an election lost, external assumptions and blames often intensify, where people tend to point fingers at a particular individual as a the cause of the party’s defeat.
“The misunderstandings going on in the party is a natural phase, it is very natural with any party that goes into opposition
“When a particular party loses an election, all assumptions by other people look true; they try to put blame on someone for causing loss,” he stated.
In his view, the NPP’s democratic principles, which include respect and tolerance of diverse opinions explain why members feel comfortable to air their views and attribute blames.
“NPP is a democratic party and every democratic party believes in the rule of law and divergent opinions so everyone can share his or her thought,” he emphasized.
He pointed out that, the NPP’s experience is not unique, citing an example that their counterparts in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) faced similar challenges after losing an election.
He indicated that led to internal divisions where some prominent members within the party moved to form their own parties.
“Such things have happened within the NDC before where some relevant members of the party moved away and formed their own parties and a typical example is Konadu Agyemang Rawlings who moved away from the NDC.
“Although her husband was the founder of the NDC, it got to a time where she parted ways, created her own party and competed with the NDC during elections; so it is very natural and synonymous with political parties,” he noted.
He stressed that every party has its own internal issues and when such things happen, it does not signify the downfall of the party but rather require them to stand firm and stabilize the party.
