Resurgent covid-19 under control – Health Minister

Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured the public that the COVID-19 outbreak is under control, with no widespread transmission reported in other parts of Accra or the country, aside from the cases identified at the University of Ghana, Legon.

He made this statement during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, emphasising that the confirmed cases are recovering well.

Mr Akandoh pointed out that the primary reason for the spread of the virus was the failure of individuals to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols, as revealed by thorough investigations.

“So far, the outbreak is limited to the University community; it has not spread widely to other areas of Accra or the rest of the country. As I mentioned earlier, a few confirmed cases are recovering well.

“After dispatching a team to investigate, we identified several key issues that fueled the spread; the most significant factor was a recent hall celebration held at the university.

“This event brought together a large crowd with minimal use of face masks or social distancing.

“Following our investigations, even after the University community became aware of the situation, we also noticed a decline in adherence to basic COVID-19 safety protocols and some challenges with contact tracing,” he stated.

Mr Akandoh further elaborated on the measures implemented by the health team to mitigate the spread of the virus. “Once the first signal arose, we acted swiftly. Here is what we did:

“We sent a national team to collaborate with the University and Municipal health authorities, held meetings with the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, the head of Noguchi, and the School of Public Health.

“We issued alerts to health facilities nationwide, and the university suspended all hall week activities while launching a campus-wide education campaign using posters, campus radio, and student leaders,” he noted.

With these proactive measures, the Ministry of Health aims to contain the outbreak effectively and safeguard public health.
