Sports Ministry lauds Black Queens’ WAFCON journey

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has praised the Black Queens for their courageous performance in the semi-final clash, of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), against host Morocco.

The Queens missed out on playing in the finals after Tuesday’s July 22, 2025, defeat to Morocco on penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.

Morocco won 4-2 in the shootout to progress to the finals where they will play Nigeria. Ghana also plays South Africa in the 3rd and 4th place match.

In an official communique released by the Sports Ministry and by it minister Kofi Iddie Adams, extended its commendation to the team despite their defeat.

It added that taking the hosts through 120 minutes of spirited football and contesting the result on penalties reflects both your determination and your commitment to the national cause.

Though the Queens did not advance to the final, the Ministry underscored their achievement as a bold reminder that Ghana remains a formidable force in African women’s football.

“Ghana is proud of what you have achieved; you have shown that our women’s football is once again competing at the highest level,” the ministry said.

The Ministry reaffirm its commitment to supporting the Black Queens throughout the remainder of the tournament.

“The Ministry will continue to stand with the team, ensuring that every requirement is met as the tournament concludes.”

Looking ahead to the third-place match against South Africa, the Minister urged the players to maintain their unity and belief, assuring them of nationwide support.

“Carry the same belief and unity onto the pitch, knowing that your country stands firmly beside you… Let us build on the positives and complete the tournament with purpose.

“You have earned our respect. Now, let us finish on a high note.”
