Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has cast doubt on the effectiveness of the GH₵1 million financial package allocated to Premier League clubs for the upcoming 2025/26 season.
The funding, a collaborative effort between Adesa Production Limited, the GFA, and the Government of Ghana, aims to support clubs and strengthen domestic football.
However, Afriyie argues that the initiative falls short of addressing the financial realities facing players, particularly in light of competitive salaries across other African leagues.
“The money is not enough to retain players in the league,” he expressed speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM.
He compared pay scales on the continent, highlighting Ethiopia’s average of $2,500 per player, Tanzania’s range of $2,500 to $3,000, and Sudan’s salaries nearing $5,000, all far above the local standards.
“Paying players GH₵5,000 isn’t enough to keep them here,” he stressed, urging stakeholders to reimagine the league’s economic model to stem the tide of player departures.
The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season is set to begin on the weekend of September 12.
