The Inspector-General General of Police (IGP), Christian Yohuno Tetteh, has been accused of plans that could potentially undermine stringent security measures for the upcoming Akwatia by-election scheduled for September.
The accuser, Member of Parliament for Oda Constituency, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, alleged that his intelligence suggests the IGP is planning to deploy inexperienced officers for the highly anticipated election.
“I know some kids who recently passed out from the Ghana Police Service, and they have been assured that they will be deployed as part of the security personnel assigned to Akwatia. So, I asked myself, does the 5,000 police personnel he promised to deploy include these inexperienced officers?
“What amount of experience do they have? They just passed out of the training school, so how can these people deal with crowd control?” Mr. Acquah questioned on Thursday, August 21, 2025, speaking on Angel TV.
He stressed that his claim was based on first-hand information and not speculation.
“I’m saying what I know. I will not come and sit on national television to say what I have not heard. I know most of these graduates,” he added.
Mr. Acquah urged the IGP to ensure that the supposed 5,000 officers to be deployed for the national exercise are fit and well-prepared for the task.
He made the comments while discussing the IGP’s earlier warning ahead of the Akwatia by-election slated for September 2, 2025.
Speaking further, the former Deputy Health Minister under the Akufo-Addo administration emphasized the need for a peaceful election at Akwatia, adding that it would come as a surprise if the NDC repeated what he described as violent behavior.
“…owing to the disgraceful act they subjected the country to at Ablekuma North, it would be surprising for them to attempt going to Akwatia with the same intentions,” he told Ohemaa Sakyiwaa on the Angel Morning Show.
The MP, while expressing his utmost concern for an incident-free election, reiterated the New Patriotic Party’s preparedness.
“But we have made our case clearly, as stated by our National Organiser, that we will be prepared for the event,” he concluded.
