The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the death of six individuals in a tragic stampede that occurred during its 2025/2026 recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.
The unfortunate incident took place on Wednesday, November 12, at the start of this year’s recruitment exercise.
In a statement, GAF announced that preliminary investigations indicate that the stampede was “triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants.”
The statement revealed that it stemmed from “breached security protocols and rushed into the gates” ahead of scheduled screening at about 6:20 AM.
“The unfortunate incident led to the death of 6 potential recruits and many others injured,” GAF’s statement confirmed.
It noted that the injured are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital, with medical teams working tirelessly to stabilise these affected individuals.
GAF extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and indicated that arrangements are being made to notify them of the incident.
