Ghanaian rapper Maradona Yeboah Adjei, popularly known as Guru, has opened up about a difficult phase in his life during his days as a student at the University of Ghana, Legon.

During an interview, the “Lapaz Toyota” hitmaker revealed that extreme shyness and discomfort pushed him to wear a nose mask and hoodies to class for an entire academic year.

Guru disclosed that transitioning into the university environment was overwhelming due to his age at the time, making it hard for him to fit in freely.

“I used to wear hoodies and nose masks. I wore it for a whole academic year. It was from level 200 to 300 that I finally stopped wearing them, and I started feeling free. I started coming out of my shell. It was very difficult,” he said.

He narrated how being in a lecture hall often made him anxious, especially when he realized people were recording him without his knowledge or understanding their intentions.

“You will be in the lecture hall and be sweating, then somebody will be taking videos of you while you don’t even know the mindset behind the video… whether trolling, mocking you or saying all sorts of things. You know how children play; they don’t care about how you feel,” Guru explained.

According to him, the experience made him extremely uncomfortable and left a lasting emotional impact.

“I wasn’t comfortable, it was a bad feeling, I can’t lie,” he added.

Guru further mentioned that he only began gaining confidence and easing into the environment when he decided to run for an SRC position, a moment that helped him gradually overcome his shyness.
