An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties to John Quartey Lamptey, a businessman alleged to have stripped his wife naked and assaulted her at his residence in Ofankor, an incident captured in a viral video.
The court granted bail after his lawyer, Frank Nii Nikoi, argued that since the prosecution had concluded its investigations and taken witness statements, it would be fair to grant bail, noting that Lamptey had been in custody for more than two weeks.
Although the Attorney General has taken over the case, Senior State Attorney Ruth Debie told the court that the prosecution preferred the accused to be remanded for his own safety.
She added that if the court was minded to grant bail, a restriction order should be imposed, as the victim and her children were living in fear.
The court, presided over by Justice Obiri Yeboah, granted bail and additionally issued a restriction order directing Lamptey to stay away from the victim and her children.
Background
The complainant, Harriet Amuzu, is a 32-year-old unemployed resident of Ofankor, while the accused, John Odartey Lamptey, is a 49-year-old businessman.
The two are married and have two children. A second accused, Grace Lamptey, aged 51, is John Lamptey’s sister.
Investigations revealed that in July 2025, Lamptey allegedly attacked Amuzu, subjected her to physical assault, inserted pepper into her vagina, and forcibly had sex with her.
He also seized her mobile phone and took away their two-year-old child. The complainant later escaped from the matrimonial home and sought refuge with her relatives.
