Minister for Justice and Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that a formal request from his office has been submitted to United States authorities for the extradition of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to Ghana.

He added that the extradition request includes Mr. Ofori-Atta alleged accomplice, Ernest Darko Akore, from the United States to face prosecution over alleged corruption charges.

Dr. Ayine announced this at a press briefing on Thursday, December 18, 2025, during the government Accountability Series.

“I have formally transmitted a request for the extradition of former finance minister, Ken Ofori-atta and his Chef de Cabinet, Ernest Darko Akore,” he said.

He indicated that on November 19, 2025, the Attorney-General’s Office received a formal request from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to initiate extradition proceedings for Kenneth Ofori-Atta and Ernest Darko Akore from the United States of America to face prosecution in Ghana.

According to the Attorney-General, following a preliminary review of the extradition request by an international unit cooperating with the A-G office, it was observed that certain aspects of the request required clarification and enhancement in order to align with applicable legal and procedural requirements.

Dr. Ayine said that with the submission of the request, it is now expected that the Department of Justice in the United States will make a determination on the request whether or not to extradite Ofori-Atta and Ernest Darko Akore.

“At this point, it is left with the to the American authorities especially the Judicial authorities to make a determination on whether a sufficient basis exists for the two accused persons to be extradited to Ghana to stand trial,” the Attorney-General stated.

The embattled former finance minister is among individuals facing accusations of alleged involvement in causing financial loss to the state in the controversial Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML).
