The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Cape Coast South Constituency and Deputy Majority Leader, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, has expressed concerns over assembly members allegedly selling streetlight bulbs that were donated by the government.

Speaking to the media after donating 400 streetlight bulbs to assembly members, Hon. Ricketts-Hagan stated that these members have failed to install the bulbs, which has plunged the constituency into darkness and increased insecurity during the night.

He appealed to the assembly members to ensure that all bulbs are fixed in their respective areas.

“I met with various groups, including the assembly members, to wish them a happy new year and give them some new year gifts. We discussed issues confronting Cape Coast that need solutions, and since they’re on the frontline of resolving problems here in Cape Coast, their role is crucial.

“One of the biggest problems that we have here is that many communities are not well lit in terms of streetlights. There have been numerous complaints in Cape Coast about the darkness, which is unacceptable for a major city like Cape Coast. I promised that after the new year celebration, I would ensure that they get light,” he stated.

In response to the allegations, Hon. Ebow Halm, Assembly Member for the Akyim Electoral Area, denied any wrongdoing. He explained that several bulbs had reached the end of their lifespan and were in need of replacement.

He assured that the donated bulbs would be used for their intended purpose, stating, “The major cause of bulb destruction is earlier encounters with sea breeze after fixing these streetlights on highway stretches.”
