Actors’ failure to promote films is killing industry – Eddie Nartey

Ghanaian actor and film producer, Eddie Nartey , has raised concerns about what he describes as the lack of support from actors when it comes to promoting movies they feature in.

According to him, many producers invest huge amounts of money into film production, yet some actors fail to help promote the projects once they are released.

In a post shared on his socials, Mr Nartey said the practice has long existed in the Ghanaian movie industry and is negatively affecting its growth.

“Producers will spend thousands and millions of cedis to shoot a movie, then when the movie is released the main actors in the movie will go silent, no post, no story, no promo. Some will even say ‘but they didn’t pay me for promotion.’ Yes, they don’t pay you for promotion but who is in the film?” he said.

The actor stressed that such attitudes discourage producers who invest heavily in film production but receive little support from the actors involved.

“In fact, for the Ghana movie industry, this particular thing has been there and it’s killing the industry,” he added.

Mr Nartey further explained that in many cases producers even have to remind or beg actors to help publicise films before their premieres.

“You will do film with people, you have to beg them. You know the film will be premiered on 1st March, they won’t post any picture or even talk about the film until the last minute when the date is getting closer before they post something,” he said.

He also criticised the tendency of some actors to post only their individual photos from the film rather than promoting the entire project.

“Even with that, they post pictures of themselves in the movie alone. And they expect that the one day you post the picture someone will leave their house to come and watch the premiere, he questioned.

Nartey emphasised that acting in today’s film industry goes beyond performance and includes actively promoting projects.

“In today’s industry, acting is not just about acting. It’s about marketing, marketing your brand,” he stated.
