Kodjonya Inferno: Poor road, speed ramps delayed lifesaving response – GNFS

The poor road network and speed ramps delayed firefighters from rescuing trapped victims in the Kodjonya inferno, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has revealed.

According to an official of the Somanya Fire Station, the bad nature of the Somanya-Kodjonya and numerous speed ramps hampered their quick response during the rescue mission.

The inferno, which occurred early Tuesday morning, March 31, 2026, in Kodjonya, a community within the Lower Manya Krobo municipality, claimed the lives of a couple and injured one of their sons.

Assistant Divisional Officer 1, of the Somanya Fire Station, Nathan Mensah Sosu, expressed concerns that, had they not been delayed en route, they could have used their available resources to save lives.

“The truth is that we faced challenges with the poor road network, compounded by the numerous speed ramps from Somanya to Kodjonya.

“This made it difficult for us to arrive at the scene on time. By the time our officers got there, the victims trapped in the building had already been burned,” he told Jaman Dehyee Opambour of Angel News during the burial rites of the couple on Thursday, April 2.

He added that “Had it not been for this hindrance, the officers could have used our available tools, such as what we called break-in tools, to gain entry into the burning building and rescue the victims.”
