The Savanna Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribe, has signed contracts to construct modern 24-hour economy markets in all seven municipal and district assemblies in the region.
The projects will be carried out in Damango, Bole, Buipe, Salaga, Kpalbe, Daboya and Sawla.
Speaking to the media during the signing, Mr. Be-Awuribe said the markets will be built under four categories according to the designs, and that, for various reasons, Damango, Bole and Buipe will receive the top designs.
He explained that Damango, as the regional capital, is strategically important; Bole is a major commercial hub and attracts traders from Côte d’Ivoire; and Buipe is a commercial centre where market activity runs from Saturday to Tuesday.
These factors, he said, justify awarding the best designs to those towns to boost their market operations.
“Indeed the first and topmost categories has been actually taken by Bole district assembly, Buipe that’s central Gonja district assembly and Damango, West Gonja district assembly.
“These three district assemblies are taking the highest designs for various reasons, knowing the strategic nature of Damango, Bole also being a major commercial hub, an international market as far as Bole is concerned, Buipe is also the commercial hub and therefore they need the best market designs,” he stated.
Mr. Be-Awuribe stressed that contractors will be pressed to work quickly and to deliver the best quality so that the markets endure for generations without structural failures.
He assured the public that the authorities will use all available means to pay contractors on time to ensure timely completion, and warned that any contractor who delays will have their contract terminated without hesitation.
“So we’ll press on the consultant to press on the contractors to give us the best of quality and I can assure you that a contractor who is not going by the certification and meeting the standards, we will not hesitate to terminate the contractors project,” he reiterated.
