MTN Ghana CEO rejects data theft claims as data usage concerns rise

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has dismissed allegations that the company is responsible for the unexplained disappearance of customers’ data bundles.

His response follows growing complaints from subscribers who claim their data is depleting faster than expected, with some reporting sudden and unaccounted losses.

Speaking on Friday, April 17, 2026, he firmly denied the accusations, stressing that any attempt to manipulate customer data would drive users away and damage the company’s reputation.

“There’s absolutely no incentive for MTN to steal data from you. Zero, because it would just chase people away, it’s not something that’s part of our values,” he said.

Mr. Blewett attributed the concerns largely to evolving data consumption patterns, explaining that modern digital habits require significantly more data than before.

He indicated that frequent online activities, including everyday tasks like banking and browsing, now consume higher volumes of data.

He further explained that background app activity, automatic updates, and increased demand for high-quality content especially video streaming are key contributors to rapid data usage.

“If you have got a better connection what does it do, it gives you a better quality video and it’s going to use more,” he revealed.

He also advised customers to take a more active role in managing their data by monitoring app usage and adjusting settings such as video quality to reduce consumption.
