Asante Akyem North MP arrest: What we know so far

Parliament has confirmed the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, at Schiphol Airport, as diplomatic and parliamentary authorities move to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the House said the Speaker and parliamentary leadership have been formally informed and are in contact with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for urgent clarification.

No official reason has yet been given for the MP’s detention, which has triggered public interest and growing questions about the events leading up to the incident.

Alleged travel timeline under scrutiny

While official details remain limited, persons close to the MP allege that he left Ghana on Saturday evening and arrived in Amsterdam on Sunday morning. According to these accounts, he was reportedly picked up by security officials shortly after arrival, before completing immigration procedures.

These claims have not been independently verified by Ghanaian or Dutch authorities.

Past allegations resurface amid detention

The development has also revived earlier unproven allegations previously linked to the MP.

In the past, Kwame Ohene Frimpong had denied claims connecting him to suspected financial crimes and alleged human trafficking related offences, insisting the accusations were targeted and misleading.

Additional allegations circulating in public discourse suggest that the MP was once under investigation by United States law enforcement agencies over suspected financial transactions linked to an African restaurant and supermarket business in Chicago.

The claims further allege that the business was suspected of being used to move fraudulent funds connected to individuals who are currently serving prison sentences in the United States.

Some reports also suggest that U.S. authorities, including the FBI, monitored related activities over several years following an alleged raid on the business premises. These accounts further claim that several women described as Ghanaian British nationals were arrested in connection with bank accounts allegedly used in the transactions.

However, none of these allegations have been proven in court, and no official authority in Ghana, the United States, or the Netherlands has confirmed any criminal charges against the MP.

Parliament seeks answers through diplomatic channels

Parliament has emphasised that it is working through diplomatic engagement to verify the facts before making further public disclosures.

“The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement noted.

For now, key details, including the reason for the detention, remain unclear, with authorities yet to confirm whether the matter relates to immigration procedures, security concerns, or any ongoing investigation.
