Acting Rent Commissioner of Ghana, Frederick Opoku, revealed some challenges confronting the institution, indicating that they have only two vehicles across the country.
He admitted the challenges the institution faces as its head, compared to the assertions he had previously.
Mr. Opoku made the admission to Ohemaa Sakyiwaa on Angel TV while discussing efforts to enforce rent laws in the country under the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
“I’m one of those who critique Rent Control that they are a toothless bulldog, incapacitated to bite. But ever since I came here, I have regretted my actions. I’m ashamed for criticising them unfairly. As boss of Rent Control, can you believe we have only two vehicles across the country? It’s a shame.
“Rent Control is a very important institution but we have two vehicles, why? Governments come and go and have caused this. Ghanaians should add their voices for Rent Control to be resourced because it is our taxpayers’ money and it must be done.”
Nevertheless, he said that new waves under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration show signs of making the institution resourceful enough to deliver its mandate accordingly.
“However, if you come to my office, you’ll be impressed. President John Dramani Mahama and his government are resetting every place. I’m telling you, I have been assured that they’re going to ensure Rent Control is resourced.
“But if you ask me today, Rent Control is under-resourced and we cannot hide it. But I hope with the signals coming and the government’s position on rent, trust me, Rent Control will be one of the best institutions in the country.
He maintained that “And I know my president, your president, our president, their president, John Mahama’s government is going to fix the rent issues and Rent Control is going to live up to its mandate.”
