The Acting Commissioner of Rent Control, Frederick Opoku, has put his job on the line amidst efforts to address the pressing challenges confronting Ghana’s rent system.

According to him, he would not hesitate to resign from office should he fail to enforce rent laws in the country.

“We are going to deploy a rent taskforce, but if you believe that I’m just ranting and making noise then it is palpable falsehood because President John Mahama appointed me to come and make sure the law works.

“I’m not going to become an armchair Commissioner to turn degrees in my chair and enjoy the juicy position. This is what I don’t want to be part of because the work needs to be done, and it must be done with a sense of urgency.

“I don’t have any business at the office apart from ensuring enforcement, and if I’m unable to perform this task, I better pack my things and go, simple. I’m not interested in any juicy position when the work is not done while the masses are suffering.”

Mr. Opoku explained the reason behind his vociferous way of discussing the subject, noting that such issues cannot be tackled head-on with laughter and softness.

“Listen very well, when the law gets hold of you, you are dead and gone. I’m not threatening but it’s a fact. Sorry for my accent but I’m saying that I’m a regulator and I didn’t come here to laugh, I came to make the law work, and you don’t make the law work by laughing.
