The days when landlords enforced ‘inhumane’ terms and conditions on tenants will soon be over, the Department of Rent Control has announced.

According to the Acting Rent Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, the government wants to restore law and order within the rental system.

He indicated that this will be addressed through punitive measures with the introduction of what he called a “Standardised Tenancy Agreement.”

Mr. Opoku explained this in an exclusive interview on Angel TV, on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

“I’m bringing a Standardised Tenancy Agreement because you cannot sit at your home and implement your own Agreement. There are some agreements of landlords that are unfair. For example, prohibiting tenants from coming home at 10PM.

“Are you dictating the time one comes home? The Constitution of the Republic of Ghana says that you cannot dictate people’s movement and for that reason you cannot say you own a house so tenants should come home 10PM or 11PM.”

He continued “That is inconsistent with the law, and any agreement that is inconsistent with the law to the effect of inconsistency is null and void. So we must get a tenancy agreement for adoption.”

According to him, these measures, when implemented, will restore order and address irregularities in tenancy agreements imposed by landlords.

He expressed that the issue of lawlessness has become too widespread in every sector, a practice he said will no longer be allowed under Rent Control.
