Energy Minister, Dr. John Abu Jinapor, has announced that the temporary Control Room at the Akosombo Switchyard will be completed by the end of September 2026, following a fire incident that gutted the facility last month.
The Minister said this after inspecting ongoing emergency restoration works at the facility on May 20, and received a comprehensive briefing from GRIDCo, led by Ing. Frank Otchere.
“The Temporary Control Room, which will be housed with modern control systems, is expected to be completed by the end of September 2026,” Mr. Jinapor said in an update.
The fire incident, which destroyed the Switchyard Control Room, disrupted power supply across the country.
Dr. Jinapor indicated that the emergency restoration measures include progress on the Temporary Control Room and the installation of enhanced fire protection systems to safeguard both interim and permanent facilities.
According to him, the government is also engaging power sector stakeholders on the construction of an ultra-modern permanent Control Room to strengthen the resilience and reliability of Ghana’s power transmission infrastructure.
The minister used the platform and commended GRIDCo, the Volta River Authority (VRA), and all technical teams for their commitment to restoring operation at the facility.
