The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has admonished Members of Parliament (MPs) to strengthen their data literacy to improve decision-making and oversight responsibilities.
He made the call at the opening ceremony of the International Data Masterclass for Members of Parliament.
The ceremony was held under the theme: “Advancing Evidence-Based Parliament: Leveraging Data for Better Decisions.”
According to the First Deputy Speaker, the programme will equip lawmakers with the skills to better engage with data and evidence.
Speaking further, he stressed that this would go a long way in enhancing Parliament’s committee work and policy oversight.
The event was attended by key officials, including the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga; the Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror; the Political Counsellor at the British High Commission, Mr. Hooman Nouruzi; and Mr. Tim Harris of the UK Office for National Statistics.
It also brought together stakeholders from the Parliamentary Training Institute, the Ghana Statistical Service, the British High Commission, the United Kingdom Office for National Statistics, and the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs.
