Health workers responsible for a newborn that went missing at the East Gonja Municipal Hospital have been arraigned before the Tamale High Court and interdicted.

The baby disappeared from the Salaga facility in an incident first reported on June 11, 2026. The newborn has still not been found.

In a statement issued by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Wednesday, June 24, Regional Director of Health Service Dr. John Ekow Otoo said the Savannah Regional Health Directorate is working with the Ghana Police Service (GPS) to locate the child.

“The staff responsible for the baby’s care before her disappearance have been arraigned before the Tamale High Court and are currently facing criminal proceedings.

“The staff in question have been interdicted pending the outcome of the case,” the statement said.

The Directorate has renewed appeals to the public for information, urging anyone with details to report to the nearest police station, the SRHD, or the East Gonja Municipal Hospital. All information will be treated with “utmost confidentiality.”

A nationwide alert has also been issued. All hospitals, child welfare clinics, and Community Health Officers have been asked to watch for any mother-baby pair with suspicious circumstances and report immediately to police.

To investigate the incident, Dr. Otoo has constituted a seven-member committee to examine how the baby went missing, recommend disciplinary action where necessary, and propose measures to prevent future occurrences.

Psychological support has been arranged for the baby’s parents as investigations continue.

“The Directorate extends its deepest sympathies to the baby’s parents and family during this difficult period,” the statement read.

The GHS reaffirmed its commitment to “providing timely, high-quality, and comprehensive healthcare” and pledged to keep the public updated on significant developments.
