President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Black Stars for their impressive performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to him, the team exceeded expectations despite doubts about their chances of progressing beyond the group stage.
Speaking after inspecting the Ho Sports Stadium as part of his two-day Resetting Tour in the Volta Region, he stated that the team demonstrated determination and resilience to prove doubters wrong.
“The Black Stars did well; nobody gave them a chance, people predicted they would crash out at the group stage, but they managed to get into the Round of 32,” he said on Friday, July 17.
Mr. Mahama further expressed belief in the team, saying the team will achieve success in future competitions if the core of the current technical and playing body is maintained.
“I’m sure that if we keep this team and persuade the coach to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and next World Cup, we will have a team that can claim the championship in any of those two competitions.”
The Black Stars progressed from Group L but were eliminated in the Round of 32 after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia at Kansas City Stadium.
They defeated Panama, held England to a goalless draw and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in the group stage.
