The Ghana Tourism Authority Ex-Staff Association (GHATEX) will launch a $400,000 national campaign to promote safer road travel and boost confidence in Ghana as a tourism destination.
The Road Travel Safety and Tourism Project will be officially launched on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (KNMP) in Accra, according to a statement issued by GHATEX.
The five-year education and advocacy initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts (MOTCCA).
GHATEX said the project is aimed at reducing road traffic accidents and strengthening both domestic and international tourism. Road transport remains the primary mode of travel in Ghana, connecting millions to tourist attractions, businesses and communities. However, the Association noted that the persistent rise in road crashes has become a matter of national concern with implications for public safety, economic activity, and tourism.
“Improving road safety is essential to sustaining tourism growth,” GHATEX stated. “Concerns over road safety have discouraged many Ghanaians and international visitors from travelling to some of the country’s most attractive destinations.”
The $400,000 project will address the challenge through sustained public education and behavioral change campaigns. Planned activities include the production and dissemination of animated videos, drama sketches, and educational messages in English and selected Ghanaian languages. The messages will focus on responsible road use, safer driving practices, and greater public awareness of road safety.
The launch date holds special significance as August 4 marks the 52nd anniversary of Ghana’s historic transition from left-hand to right-hand driving in 1974 — a landmark national exercise widely regarded as one of the country’s most successful public awareness campaigns. GHATEX said it hopes to draw inspiration from that achievement to promote a new national culture of road safety.
The launch is expected to bring together key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including development partners, transport operators, insurance companies, telecommunication firms, tourism practitioners, government institutions, and members of the media.
GHATEX has called on all stakeholders to support the initiative to reduce road crashes, save lives, and create a safer road transport environment that will enhance tourism, promote economic development, and improve quality of life.
