A fishing canoe with seven crew members on board has been reported missing off the coast of the Western Region, prompting a joint search operation by security agencies.
The canoe, identified as Second Chance, departed the Sekondi Fishing Harbour on October 9, 2026, for a fishing expedition offshore Axim and has since not returned.
The incident was reported to the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on October 18, by the owner, Nana Kweku Atta.
According to a statement from the Western Regional Police Command dated October 20, the Western Regional Marine Police Command is leading a coordinated search with the Ghana Navy, Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Fisheries Commission and fishing communities.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that attempts to contact the crew have been unsuccessful. An update suggests the canoe may have suffered engine failure and drifted towards Tema and the Volta coast. However, its last known position is yet to be confirmed,” the Police stated.
To widen the search, the Police said they have alerted key stakeholders along the coast.
“The Western Naval Command, Ghana Maritime Authority, Fisheries Commission, relevant coastal police stations, Chief Fishermen and the Eastern Naval Command in Tema have been alerted to assist in the search,” the statement added.
The Police are appealing to the public for support, urging “fishing communities along the coast to report any sightings or information about the canoe to the nearest police station.”
