The Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye has advised all Members of Parliament (MPs) who lost in the just ended Parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to abandon their duties at Parliament.
He advised that MPs must act as statesmen and discharge their duties in accordance with the Constitution at all times.
Several sitting MPs from the Majority side of the house lost their bids to represent their parties in Parliament at the primaries of the NPP organised on Saturday, June 20, 2020.
They have since become the subject of ridicule on social media.
Most of the MPs are yet to come from their constituencies and this led to a low attendance in the house.
Commenting on this in the House, the Speaker encouraged MPs who lost in the primaries to come to the realisation that politics is not always a win-win situation.
“Once you win today, be prepared to encounter lost as well some day to come, therefore all must come together in carrying the duties of the House for the rest remaining period till elections are held in December, 2020…,” he said.
He further wished sitting MPs who sailed through the primaries well.
Prof. Oquaye also entreated the MPs who talk to their supporters to calm down and know that the game of politics is well understood to be a lose or win game.
He further encouraged that some of the MPs who lost in the primaries can still serve the country in various capacities outside of Parliament.
