The Association of Pentecostal and Charismatic Clergy believes recent attacks on Bishop Charles Agyinasare and some men of God in the country were sponsored by the state.

Accusing the government of trying to muzzle free speech, the Association in a strongly worded statement called for a “righteous indignation” to “resist” what it claims are attempts by government to censor the clergy.

“Recently there has been a calculated state sponsored attack on one of Ghana’s revered and finest Bishops – Bishop Charles Agyinasare,” the statement signed by Rev. John Armah, General Secretary of the Association of Pentecostal and Charismatic Clergy said on Thursday.

Bishop Agyinasare who founded the Perez Chapel International has been vocal on a number of national issues mincing no words.

This has incurred the displeasure of some leading members of the governing New Patriotic Party and some supporters.

“The government’s communication machinery descended heavily on him with unprintable insults, threats and attacks,” the clergy observed.

“Mr. President, with your over 70 years on earth, I am sure you’ve read enough history to the effect that all those who persecuted the church never succeeded,” the statement admonished.

The statement further noted that the church is being persecuted.

“And it is definitely going to get worse if we do not rise up and speak even as we pray. Never in the history of Ghana have we ever experienced a direct and targeted crusade against Christian leaders by a particular government like we have it today.”
