Residents of Adjemesu, a farming community in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region have appealed to the Ghana Highway Authority, to urgently construct speed ramps and pedestrian crossing on its side of the highway leading to Anwiankwanta.
This will address the “needless” accidents on that stretch of the highway in which pedestrians especially school children are often knocked down by speeding vehicles while crossing.
At least five persons have been knocked down since November 2019 with some sadly losing their lives, aggrieved residents told Pure FM’s Osei Kwadwo.
“The situation is so pathetic. Majority of schools including our borehole in Adjemesu are located at the other side of the road. Due to that people especially children have to cross the road to fetch water, to go to school and farm.”
A resident added, “drivers do not want to reduce the speed when they get here because there is no speed ramp on the road. We have to spend not less than 5 to 10 minutes if we want to cross the road”.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for Adjemesu Electoral Area Stephen Amankwaa has given authorities one-month ultimatum to address their concerns.
“We don’t want to put the law into our own hands that’s why we are appealing to the authorities to come to our aid but if the authorities fail to come to our aid, we will construct our own speed ramp to help reduce accident and knock down rates in the community.”
