Postpone funerals for the dead – Mortuary workers to bereaved families

Mortuary workers say bereaved families who failed to claim bodies of their dead relatives as of Wednesday, September 30, 2020 would have to postpone their funeral and burial arrangements.

This follows the nationwide strike called by the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) effective Thursday, October 1.

They complain the Ministry of Health has failed to resolve long-standing concerns of their members including conditions of service and the unhealthy working environments.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of MOWAG, Ebenezer Asirifi, said bereaved families will not have access to their dead tomorrow when the workers are expected to begin the strike.

According to Ebenezer Asirifi, government has taken the stress of mortuary workers for granted and has failed to improve their condition of services.

“Despite all the risk, government has failed to address our grievances. Our work is very dangerous but we have poor conditions of service, ” Ebenezer Asirifi explained.

He added that “When you visit some mortuaries in Ghana, the facility lacks even equipment for the workers. Government has failed to even provide us with even equipment including gloves.”
