The President of the Republic, Nana Akufo-Addo, has indicated his determination to see to the production of vaccines in the country.

During his update no. 24 on “measures taken against spread of coronavirus” on February 28, 2021, he announced the establishment of a committee intended to ensure the realization of the plan.

According to him, the committee is under the chairmanship of the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng. 

The President noted that the task of the committee is to formulate a “concrete plan of action towards vaccine development and manufacturing.”

Here is the full statement by the President: “I want to reiterate my determination that we should manufacture vaccines here in Ghana.”

“To this end, a committee has been set up under the chairmanship of the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, the world renowned Scientist, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng which is formulating an concrete plan of Action towards vaccine development and manufacturing.”

Meanwhile, Ghana has taken receipt of first consignment of some 600,000 AstraZaneca vaccines distributed under the Covax vaccine-sharing initiative by the World Health Organization (WHO).

They are expected to be rolled out with the President, Vice President and First and Second Ladies being the first to take it publicly on Monday March 1, 2021, according to President Akufo-Addo.

He noted that the first vaccination will be done in 43 districts which are the epicenters of the pandemic in the country. 

He said: “From Tuesday March 2 to March 15, 2021, the Ghana Health Service will begin deployment of the 600,000 AstraZaneca vaccines with persons in groups one and two being the target of this first vaccination.”

“It will be conducted in 43 districts which are the epicenters of the pandemic in this country. There are 25 are in Greater Accra, 16 in Ashanti and 2 in the Central Region.”

He urged all not to throw caution to the wind but continue to practice the Covid-19 safety protocols.
