The office of Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged the general public to disregard what it calls a “fabricated” story about a secret wife of the second gentleman of the land.

The name Ramatu has been trending on social media in recent time with many alleging that the unknown woman is the first wife of Dr. Bawumia.

The name gained popularity on the media landscape when the newly elected Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, in what is believed to be a slip, mentioned it when introducing the wife of the Vice President, Samira Bawumia during the swearing in of President Akufo-Addo on January 7, 2021.

The opposition National Democratic Congress has been making subtle political capital out of the slip, suggesting Dr. Bawumia had a first wife but chose to flaunt the second wife in public instead.

But the Office of the Vice President has issued an official statement to set the record straight on the said Ramatu.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Vice-President has only one wife, his dear Samira Bawumia and they have been married for 17 years even though his religion permits him to marry up to four wives,” the statement asserted.

IGNORE FABRICATED RAMATU STORY

The attention of the office of the Vice-President has been drawn to stories and pictures circulating of a woman supposedly named “Ramatu” who is being claimed as a wife of the Vice-President.

The office of the Vice-President wishes to inform the general public that the Vice-President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has never met or seen this purported Ramatu let alone take her as a wife. She is a figment of the imagination of people trying hard to tarnish the image of the Vice-President for their own purposes.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Vice- President has only one wife, his dear Samira Bawumia and they have been married for 17 years even though his religion permits him to marry up to four wives.

We ask the public to ignore the propaganda and deliberate falsehood.
