Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has indicated that the Regional Security Council (Regsec) would play a pivotal role in the fight against illegal small scale mining activities popularly called “galamsey” in country.
He made it known during his two-day tour of the region that hosts larger portion of Ghana’s natural resources—Western Region—to appreciate the state of the lands and resources as President Akufo-Addo directed.
Abu Jinapor, at a meeting held at the Regional Cordinating Council with the Regional Minister, Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, noted that the anti-galamsey initiative led by his ministry which is seeking to engage all stakeholders of the industry on proper ways of mining the mineral resources, will need the regsec throughout to enforce all directives it will take.
While expressing his appreciation to and using as reference point the opposition party’s—National Democratic Congress (NDC)—leadership on the select Committee of Parliament on Mines and Forestry, who are rallying behind him in the fight, the sector minister also stressed the need to employ a “broad-based non-partisan approach” to the fight.
According to the sector minister, the non-partisan approach is a sure way to win the battle against the canker.
However, Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah the Regional Minister, assured Mr. Jinapor of his commitment to doing his best together with chiefs and people in western region to help the minister execute and achieve the mandate the President has assigned him.
