Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has condemned government’s neglect of basic schools in the country.

Per the legislator’s estimation, the basic schools in the country are in dire need of funding, infrastructure as well as quality personnel however, government has consistently failed to pay attention to these basic but essential necessities.

Francis-Xavier Sosu believes that the Akufo-Addo led administration has thrown all its weight behind their flagship programme, Free SHS, however, he emphasized that, “Free SHS alone is not a panacea to the problems of Education in Ghana”.

“It is obvious that when it comes to education generally and more particularly basic education, this government has been most insensitive”.

“Insistence on an additional examination of Teachers for the purposes of licensing them is obviously not the most critical need in basic schools today. Basic schools need adequate funding and infrastructure”, the human rights activist added.

The Madina MP, who doubles as a Deputy Ranking Member of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee further recounted that, in August 2019, he felt sad about the poor state of basic schools at Tahiru Kura in the Oti Region.

While questioning how the nation can guarantee a prosperous future for such children, Francis-Xavier Sosu further argued that there are many schools even in the capital city, without adequate desks and good learning environments.

He expressed the view that the nation is causing more harm than good to students given the current state of some rural schools in the country.

He’s therefore, calling on all state actors and stakeholders to rise above political deception in the educational sector and put the future of the children first.

“There is the need for deliberate intervention to improve basic schools across the country and more particularly, basic schools in rural areas such as the Oti Region in order to secure the collective future of these children”.
