Investigative Journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has expressed sympathy for wife of Jonathan Ohene Nkunim, the quack doctor at the centre of Manasseh’s latest investigative piece – The Licensed Sex Predator.
According to the journalist, despite doing his work and seeking justice for victims of the suspect, he fears the impact his story would have on Mrs. Sarah Ohene Nkunim.
“In all of this, the person I feel pity for the most is the woman [wife of Jonathan Ohene Nkunim]. Prior to the release of the documentary someone sent the wife the link to the story. She couldn’t help herself so the police had to intervene and encourage her on the day of arrest. She’s currently nursing a three-month-old baby”.
Manasseh made the disclosure while responding to a question about how he feels about the investigative piece.
“I am human and I have sympathy. I don’t take pleasure in seeing anyone going to prison”, he told Kofi Adoma Nwanwani on the Anopa Bↄfoↄ Morning Show.
He however defended that; on one side some people may think that the journalist is hard-hearted but when you view it from the victims’ perspective, individuals can appreciate why what happened had to occur.
“You have to think about the victims, those suffering from the actions of the suspect. For instance, this man slept with a woman without protection and we have HIV/AIDS still among us. Should he transmit the virus to any of the other women he has sexually abused, you can imagine how widespread this could be if they pass it on to their spouses too”
The ace investigator further revealed that investigative journalism is not a job one feels excited to do.
He recounted how he felt tempted to drop his incriminating piece on Dr. Ali Gabass, who is currently serving a 25-year jail term for sodomizing a 16-year-old boy.
The Licensed Sex Predator is an investigative report in which Manasseh Azure Awuni of The Fourth Estate reveals how a licensed health practitioner used his facility and practice as bait to sexually assault scores of women who went there seeking treatment.
The culprit, Mr. Jonathan Ohene Nkunim of Nature’s Hand Therapeutic Centre, is currently in the grips of the police, following the release of the documentary.
Mr. Ohene Nkunim, who had earlier denied allegations and evidence against him, later confessed on the day of his arrest, “I’m a bad person, and I need to die”.
