The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reportedly written to the Ghana Police Service informing them that the Madina Member of Parliament (MP) is out of the country on Parliamentary business.

Francis-Xavier Sosu was expected to make an appearance before the Kaneshie District Court on Monday November 8, 2021 to answer to charges levelled against him, but failed to show up.

According to Police Prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sylvestre Asare, a letter received from the the Speaker indicated that the MP was out of the jurisdiction on a Parliament business.

The case was consequently adjourned to November 16, 2021.

The Human Rights Lawyer’s arraignment before the court follows report that he failed to resisted arrest by the Ghana Police Service last week.

He was alleged to have incited some of his constituents to block roads in his constituency during demonstration resulting in a traffic situation during a demonstration he led on October 25, 2021 in the La-Nkwantanang Municipality.

The roads included the Ayi-Mensah, Danfa and Otinibi stretches.

Basing his argument on articles 117 and 118 of the 1992 Constitution, Mr. Sosu said he was on parliamentary duties when he was leading his constituents in the demonstration.

He added during an interview with some journalists: “and not only was I doing that, I actually served the police notice that right after the event, I was going to go to a leadership meeting in Parliament.”

Though the Speaker of Parliament had issued a statement earlier indicating his inability to release the MP to assist in investigations regarding the incident, the Ghana Police Service noted it had processed him for Court today, to respond to the charges.
