The Deputy Commissioner of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Kathy Addy, has stated with grave concern the growing number of unemployed youth in the country as it poses a serious threat to national security.

Speaking with Kwame Owusu Asante Shadrack after an Inter-Party Dialogue Committee meeting with stakeholders in Assin Breku in the Assin North District on the dangers of violent extremism, Mrs. Addy said it is easier for the idle hands to be recruited to perpetrate acts of violence.

She added that although COVID-19 Prevalence is a contributing factor to the high unemployment rate it shouldn’t be the youth’s comfortable zone to avail themselves to be used anyhow because there are still available opportunities.

“the youth shouldn’t say that they are not working so if anybody give them GH₵50 to engage in a violent act they would do it, because even if they do it they won’t get a job” she said.

Meanwhile, the Assin Praso District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Isaac Tetteh urged that people should consider the interest of the nation first to desist from all forms of violence, for it is better to live in peace.

He explained that School children must be sensitized on national cohesion and peaceful coexistence.

“Information centres and journalists are another source of violence so going forward we want to regulates their activities” He said
