The Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (CIGCI) has taken notice of false reports in recent publications regarding its publication of origin differentials (known as country premium) for Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, the world’s two largest producers of cocoa.

The CIGCI and its member countries, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, at the end of May 2022 decided to publish the origin differentials for each country, on a monthly basis, to have more transparency in the sector. PUBLICATION OF COCOA ORIGIN DIFFERENTIALS FOR CÔTE D’IVOIRE AND GHANA – Côte D’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (cighci.org)

In July, the two countries took the decision to no longer sell their cocoa at origin differentials below zero, and on 29 July 2022, the CIGCI issued the monthly publication on its website.

CIGCI would like to emphasize that there has not been any change made to this publication. JULY 2022: PUBLICATION OF COCOA ORIGIN DIFFERENTIALS FOR CÔTE D’IVOIRE AND GHANA – Côte D’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (cighci.org)

The separate country quality premium has been negative since the introduction of the Living Income Differential (LID) in 2019, therefore eroding the effects of the premium that was meant to secure cocoa farmers higher wages.

The CIGCI affirms that the issue came up in the meeting with industry on 8th July 2022 in Accra, where the countries’ representatives stated that the quality of cocoa in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana had not diminished, and it should therefore be reflected in the price.

The Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative therefore encourages stakeholders as well as the public to refer to its website www.cighci.org for all authentic information on cocoa origin differentials.
