The Director-General of Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), Dr Kyeremeh Atuahene, has urged the public to find out their Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) status to ensure healthy living.
He indicated that people still have misconceptions about HIV but the virus is real and must be taken seriously for treatment before it develops into Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
Dr Kyeremeh revealed that more than 22,000 people in the country get infected with HIV annually which attests to the existence of the viral disease.
According to him, more than 100,000 people in the country are currently living with HIV but do not know their status because they have not been diagnosed.
Thus, they need to check their status for immediate treatment to suppress the infection’s viral load.
The AIDS Commission Director-General also urged HIV patients to accept treatment since “all HIV-related services in the country are free” adding, “you don’t need to pay anything.”
He spoke on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, when the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) together with its partners launched the 5th edition of the National HIV and AIDS Research Conference (NHARCON).
The conference is aimed at developing strategies for advancing all their efforts to end AIDS by 2030.
It will gather all who are working in the field of health as well as leaders, people living with HIV and others committed to ending the epidemic
