President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s failure to vacate his presidency over his utter failure to end illegal mining otherwise known as galamsey in Ghana is a result of his gains in the practice, Akwasi Addae Odike has alleged.
The presidential hopeful said the president has demonstrated enough evidence of his failure to clamp down on the menace due to his incompetence over the past years.
According to Akwasi Addai Odike, Nana Akufo- Addo should have patiently eaten his humble pie by resigning from the presidency following his promise to put his presidency on the line of the galamsey fight.
However, the president, according to him, still holds the post because of his benefits from the practice.
Reiterating that President Akufo-Addo was “incompetent” to end the illegal mining, Odike alleged that the President’s utterances amidst his vow to eradicate the galamsey is a clear indication of his involvement in the act.
The founder and leader of the United Front Party (UFP) made the statement on Monday, October 10, 2022, on Angel FM’s Anopa Bofo morning show while commenting on President Akufo Addo’s recent meeting with Chiefs and MMDCEs in Kumasi to renew his (Nana Addo) commitment to curb the illicit activities.
He describes the said engagement as a “galamsey shareholders meeting” to discuss the benefits of the practice.
“When he [President Akufo Addo] went to the Kumasi, he admitted that he failed to vacate his presidency that he put on the line for the galamsey fight so he needed the help from the chiefs. Meanwhile, you have failed to oblige with your own covenants and vows.
“So, what Nana Addo said in Kumasi, we should have made him resign that same day in Kumasi. If he is an honest person who fears God and not that he benefits from the galamsey, he should have stepped down by now due to his own vows.
“If you put your presidency on the line and the same person, comes back to tell Ghanaians that he has not succeeded in the fight so he needed people’s assistance, then what is he sitting there doing?” he quizzed.
“If he is a man who has integrity and conscience, then he should have stepped down, he is not an honest person,” Odike told the host, Kwamina Sam Biney.
According to him, the president has been entertained by Ghanaians too much giving him the capacity to take the people for granted, a situation he said is disturbing.
