‘I owe Ghanaians no apology’ – Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez expressed no remorse in denying Ghana a goal in the 2010 FIFA World Cup

Uruguayan International Luis Alberto Suarez has stated that he finds no reason to apologize for his infamous 2010 handball against Ghana.

Suarez made the comments ahead of his side’s last group match against Ghana slated for Friday at the Al Janoub Stadium (Al Wakrah), a game scheduled to kick off at 15:00GMT.

During the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the former Liverpool and Barcelona forward left pains on the heart of Ghanaians after he denied the Black Stars a semi-final qualification after handling a ball off the goal line.

Ghana was awarded a late penalty; Asamoah Gyan’s subsequent kick struck the crossbar and Ghana eventually lost to Uruguay in the penalty shootout after extra time.

Speaking at a conference ahead of the match many have termed as a revenge or repeat in 12 years, Luis Suarez said he saw nothing wrong with what he did.

“I don’t need to apologise. I’d apologize if I injured a player but, in this situation, I handled the ball, I took a red card, and the Ghana player missed the penalty,” he said with no remorse.

The one-time Ajax goal poacher defended that he did not contribute to the penalty miss because it had to do with Asamoah Gyan’s misfortune to strike the ball against the post.

“I didn’t miss the penalty, it’s not my responsibility,” the Uruguay attacker added.

Meanwhile, a member of Ghanaian-losing-side, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu has urged the Black Stars players not to think about avenging the 2010 painful defeat to Uruguay.

Ghana needs a draw or a win baring any other results in the game between Portugal and South Korea to qualify from the group stage having accumulated 3 points.

Meanwhile, Uruguay who are on one point after two matches needs nothing but a win against Ghana to book its ticket to the knockout stage.
