The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Wing have condemned and expressed their concern over the violence that occurred at the Youth and Women Conference of the opposition National Democratic Party [NDC] at the University of Cape Coast.
According to them, they are dissatisfied with the leadership of the NDC for not taking action of the sordid act that occurred.
The NPP’s youth wing’s condemnation follows the violent incident that happened on Saturday, December 10, 2022, when two rival groups of the NDC violently clashed throwing stones, blocks, sticks, clubs, chairs among others, causing injury to three persons and destruction to property.
The situation was so tense that it took the intervention of the police to intervene. Following this, an initial review of police-specific video footages of the event, 16 suspects have so far been identified for their principal role in the violence and have been declared wanted on the police list.
Condemning the incident in a statement signed by Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organizer, argued that the action of the NDC youth might have been motivated by former President John Mahama.
They claimed Mr. Mahama is on record to have stated that “the NDC has revolutionary background and are second to none when it comes to unleashing violence.”
To this effect, the NPP Youth Wing believes what happened over the weekend is a clear indication that the youth of the opposition party have been “brainwashed with such unholy mentality” and “culminated in the barbaric display.”
“We are totally appalled that, till now the leadership of the NDC have not condemned the insipid act nor have offered any apology for the callousness. It will be brazen if the NDC leadership fail the Ghanaian youths with deafening silence and offer no apology and an assurance that such misbehavior will not be seen again.
“‘It is difficult to comprehend how a supposed-to-be conference to elect leadership for their wings, will witness a gathering of gun kum machete-wielding thugs and vigilantes at the precincts of UCC, an intellectual hub. Elections are about ballot not bullets,” the NPP youth wing captured in its statement.
They are calling on the police to take legal action since their opponent’s action breaches the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 of the law and failure to act on this will surely promote acts of Political vigilantism in future.
