Gov’t to support Christian Atsu’s family to give him befitting burial – Bawumia

Ghana to give Christian Atsu a befitting burial

The Government of Ghana has promised to fully support the family of late Black Stars player, Christian Atsu and give the deceased a befitting burial.

This was confirmed by Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the Kotoka International Airport after the remains of the late footballer arrived at airport at 7:30 pm on Sunday evening.

The body of the late player was flown to Ghana after it was recovered from the rubble of his apartment. Atsu was a victim of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake which struck Turkey on the February 6, 2023.

His body was recovered after almost 12 days of thorough search by a rescue team.

Dr. Bawumia who led government’s delegation to receive the body of Christian Atsu noted that Atsu’s family would not be alone in this difficult time and added that “the state will [be] fully involve with the family in providinng Atsu a befitting burial.”

“He (Atsu) was much loved, and we will surely miss him.

“It is a very sad day that we are here to receive the remains of our brother, Christian Atsu. We hoped against hope and we prayed every day that for our brother to be found but when he was found, he was no more.

“He played for the Black Stars and was much loved. We will sorely miss him. It is a painful loss,” Dr. Bawumia said.

The body was conveyed to the 37 Military Hospital morgue for preservation pending official schedules for the burial.

Other dignitaries present at the ceremony were Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Evans Bobie Opoku, deputy minister of Youth and Sports, Prosper Harrison Addo, General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Tamimu Issah, a former spokesperon of the GFA among others.
