The Ashaiman Constituency Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party has distanced itself from the supposed endorsement of Madam Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as running mate to John Dramani Mahama.
In a statement issued by the Constituency Secretary, Allan De-graft Quansah, the committee regards the approval as “unofficial” and a position that “does not represent the majority view as purported by the group”.
The disclaimer follows the championing of calls by some party members for the public to support the 2020 vice presidential candidate to be re-selected for the 2024 general elections, which occurred on August 29, 2023.
In the September 5, 2023, press statement, the executives said, “We believe in the democratic processes within our great party and trust our leader, H.E John Dramani Mahama, to make the best decision for our collective success”.
They, therefore, urged the party members to refrain from putting undue pressure on the leader and to allow Mr Mahama the “freedom to select a vice-presidential candidate without any external influences”.
Reminding the members of the party’s strength lying in unity, the executives also urged the members to prioritize the collective goal of the party over individual interests, adding “Together, we can achieve a brighter future for our constituency and the nation.
