African Games: Mukarama makes the difference as Ghana silences Nigeria for Gold

A Mukarama Abdulai’s extra-time goal helped Ghana win Gold in the African Games Women’s football competition over their Nigerian counterparts.

The all-important goal becomes the match-winner in a dramatic comeback at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Thursday, March 21, 2024.

With Ghana and Nigeria rekindling their rivalry once again on the continent, it was the Super Falconets who were off to a brighter start as they dominated play from the early minutes of the first half.

Their efforts finally paid off in the 23rd minute with a goal courtesy of Nijdeka after a mistake from goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku cushioned the Nigerians to a 1-0 lead.

With the Ghanaian fans being silenced at the Cape Coast Stadium, the Black Princesses pushed for the equalizer to give the home fans something to cheer on but proved futile.

Back from recess, the Black Princesses’ equalizer finally arrived in the 78th minute when Tracey Twum scored from a well-rehearsed cross from Comfort Yeboah.

With 12 minutes to full time, both sides fetched for the match-winner however the game ended 1:1 in regulation time and needed to travel into extra-time of another 30 minutes.

Just before the 10th minute of the first 15 minutes of the extra-time Mukarama Abdulai scored the match-winner after receiving a pass from Mafia Nyame to give the Ghanaian fans the bragging right over the Nigerians.

The crowdy Cape Coast Stadium went into noisy and jubilating aiding the Princesses to hold onto their lead to end the game 2-1 in their favour.

The result means Ghana won Gold in the Women’s football Competition in the ongoing 13th African Games hosted in Accra.
