The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region has admonished the youth to take interest in promoting national cohesion and peaceful coexistence.

The Municipal Director for the Commission, Mr. John Tadari, who spoke at a town hall meeting on the theme “National Cohesion:  Inclusive Participation”, explained the need for all Ghanaian youth to unite in combating the social canker of vigilantism and seek to promote peace.

“When we all make up our minds to live in peace, when all associations under the Christian communities, Muslim communities and Traditional communities take the decision to coexist peacefully then we can have national cohesion”, he said.

“NCCE has taken the step to preach and share the word of peace with leaders of various groups so that we can avoid clashes and disagreements, and even should they occur, we should have an understanding among ourselves to resolve them amicably. We are all involved. Even as security services, though we protect the peace of the country, we can also break it hence the need work within the remit of the law”, the commissioner added.

He believes that the peace being enjoyed in the country is very important and should not be taken for granted by engaging in any acts of violence that will bring disruptions in the country.

On his part, the Immigration Commander at Nkwanta South, Superintendent Philip Gyekyi, stated that the activities of sectionalism and violent extremisms in Ghana and other countries like Nigeria and Cameroon can entangle the West African subregion in another chaotic conflict if not handled with caution.

“The spill over of violence from the Sahel Region, violence during elections as well as recent reports of ritual murders, armed robbery cases communal violence such as chieftaincy disputes, tribal conflicts…all of these can endanger peace and national cohesion. Violent acts affect the image of the country as a safe destination for foreigners. Also, research shows that the youth are perpetrators of violent extremism acting mostly out of ignorance”, said Mr. Gyekyi.

According to Angel TV’s Caleb Kwasi Ali, the program was attended by representatives from all the security services, chiefs, assembly members, leaders from identifiable associations, the youth and some officials from the commission in the municipality.
