A tragic incident occurred on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Abease, along the Prang to Kintampo road in the Bono East Region, where a police officer was fatally shot by his colleague.

According to reports gathered by our reporter, Kwabena Manu, a funeral rite was underway, and mourners were headed to the cemetery for the burial. However, they encountered a police barrier.

The mourners reportedly asked a female police officer stationed at the barrier to open the local barricade, but she refused. The mourners eventually made their way to the cemetery without her assistance.

On their return from the cemetery, the same female police officer again refused to open the barricade, leading to a confrontation between her and the mourners.

Reports indicate that the situation escalated when one of the mourners allegedly insulted the female police officer where she subsequently called for reinforcement.

Meanwhile, the mourners had already left the scene and returned to the funeral grounds.

According to further reports, responding officers stormed the community where the funeral was being held and clashed with the mourners in an attempt to make arrests.

During the chaos, a police officer identified as Asiedu allegedly fired warning shots.

Kwabena Manu’s report detailed that, another officer, identified as Ofori, who was passing by on his motorbike on his way to church, intervened in an attempt to disarm Asiedu, who was known for his short temper and erratic behaviour.

A struggle reportedly ensued between the two officers, during which the gun accidentally discharged, shooting Ofori in the abdomen.

The injured officer was rushed to a nearby clinic at Abease and later transferred to the Techiman Government Hospital, where he, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries on Monday, December 16, 2024.

Asiedu, popularly known as “GH,” fled the scene after realizing the harm caused. However, he is reported to have later turned himself in to the police for investigations.
