2022 Budget: Government to supply Borteyman sporting facility with logistics

The Ghana government has said it will purchase sports logistics and equipment for the completion of the multipurpose sports facility at Borteyman in the Greater Accra Region.

The motive according to the government, is to focus on getting the Borteyman Olympic Stadium ready for hosting of the 2023 All-African Games.

Speaking on Wednesday, 17th November, 2021, during the presentation of the 2022 Budget on the floor of Parliament, the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori Atta, revealed plans towards the state-of-the-art sporting facility.

“In 2022, the Ghana will participate in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and continue with preparatory activities towards organising and hosting the 13th African Games in Accra in 2023”

“Government will procure sports logistics and equipment and begin the construction of a new multipurpose sports hall, hostel facilities and an olympic-size swimming pool at Borteyman in Accra” Ken Ofori-Atta stated.

On benefits enjoyed by the sports industry in the year under review, the finance minister highlighted the completion stages of some stadia across the country that were under renovation in 2021.

“Accra Sports Stadium 98% complete; Phase 1 of Baba Yara Stadium 98% complete; Essipong Stadium 90% complete; and Cape Coast Stadium 60% complete” he said.

About the Project

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, cut the sod on the University of Ghana’s 100-acre land at Borteyman for the construction of a state-of-the-art sporting facility.

The sports complex includes a thousand-capacity 8-lane swimming pool, one-thousand-seater multi-purpose sports hall (for Basketball, Badminton, Boxing and Tennis) lecture halls, student hostels and lecturers bungalows.
